One Canadian's Website ~ Not Just Quilting
Over the years I've done lots of needlepoint, petit point, embroidery and quilting projects. Here's a few of them. Some of these are from patterns by other quilt designers, as indicated in the credits. Others are my own original patterns or adapted from traditional blocks. A couple are wannabequilts (pieced and awaiting quilting). Most of these images can be clicked for a close up look (they will open in a new window). I've indicated where you can click for a close-up photograph or drawing (from EQ) for a closer look at some of these. I hope you enjoy viewing my quilts as much as I enjoy sharing them with you.
Cat
Lover's Vest This is my very favourite vest, my own design
made in a variety of techniques. Several cats (from Debbie Mumm's
Bowsers and Meowsers pattern booklet) were appliquéd front and
back. I found some great border fabric for the lower hemline. Cat
paw prints were stencilled in fabric paint walking up the front and
over the shoulders. Finished by machine quilting in a meandering
pattern
Christmas Cardinal
This was a Quilters' Round Robin I
participated in, along with email friends from my online guild -
it's not quite finished, but getting there. The pattern for the
centre appliqué that I did came from a pattern by Zylpha Siudara as
published in Traditional Quiltworks Issue #65. Several borders (not
shown here) were added as the quilt made the "rounds". One of my
Y2K projects.
Genesis
This is an original quilt I made with Habitat Fabric by designer
Jane Kriss The centre and background were pieced, and then
the "critters" were cut from the designers fabric and appliquéd
in place. Please visit Jane's website for more of her great
fabrics. This one went to Quilt Market without me!
Warm Winter Nights Quilt
Machine
pieced but still to be quilted. A simple half-square triangle block pattern, which is also used in the border.
Fabrics all have winter theme...mittens, boots, hot coca mugs, winter words, paisley-like scarves print, many from the "wear warm clothes" fabric collection.
The colours are blue, gold, and beige-tan. Made for cuddling up in a cozy chair on a winter evening with a cup of hot cocoa, a good book, and
a cat curled up beside me.
Autumn Memories
A traditional
leaf pattern in an original setting, this is a lap-size quilt finished
1999. I wanted to make a quilt that reminded me of eastern Canada's
beautiful fall leaves swirling about each autumn. Each leaf is composed of 7
different fabrics in bright primary colours of red, green or yellow, stems are
appliquéd bias tubes. The background was a mottled gray-green, very dark, as I
wanted it to look like a forest floor covered with old leaves.
Exploding Star
I made this big, soft, comfy pillow from fabrics by designer Jane
Kriss. All fabrics are from her Floral Indulgence series for Northcott
Fabrics. For my original Exploding Star block I used Jane's black on black
fabric for the background, and coordinating prints and tone on tones in mauves
and prints. Quilting: the background and centre square were machine quilted with
meandering stitch in rainbow multi-coloured rayon silky thread. The fabric and
quilting didn't scan well, so this is a representation. I just made this again in graduating greens for the star points, dark in the centre moving to light at the outside.
Background is a white on white tone print. It looks totally different!

Frosty Five
The
pattern for this great quilt is Lynette Jensen's design as published in
American Patchwork & Quilting, December 1996 issue. My version was pieced, buttonhole appliquéd and hand quilted as a wall hanging and given as a Christmas gift to my Mom in December 1998
Gone Fishin'
This was made for family members who enjoy camping, hiking and canoeing.
This pattern is one by Calico Garden Patterns. I found some great
fabric with log cabins, snowshoes, mountains and canoes to coordinate with the
pattern's designs for the iron-on appliqué blocks. Made and machine
appliquéd in 1998.
Moose Junction
Pattern from Pine Needles by Mekenna Ryan.
I love her appliqué patterns and have made a couple of them. This
one reminded me of the salmon, deer, mountains, evergreen trees,
Canada Geese which we have in British Columbia, our province.
Another family gift, this one was also made with iron-on appliqué
and machine quilted in 1998. And I just finished another of Mekenna's designs
(not yet posted here) of horses and a cowboy in silhouette.
Cat
Tails Quilt
I love this one! It is machine pieced and hand-quilted, I used Debbie Mumm fabrics
in gold and blues. Instructions for this one can be found on the web, the pattern
is from Auntie.Com's Quilt-Zine’s Mystery Quilts.
Road to a Friend's House
This was a gift to a friend in honour of a special birthday. The block designs are the Homeward Bound series from Lynnette
Jensen’s book "The Thimbleberries Book of Quilts", with two blocks slightly adapted. I put in people peeking out of some windows, and put curtains in others. There is a walk around the perimeter of our island city and the border represents the surrounding water. There are houses to represent the homes of her friends, family, church. There is a condo and even a trailer home-on-wheels. I found some lovely night fabric for the background, and appliquéd stars to the centre part of the quilt. The colours don't show up as true in this photograph as in the real quilt. This one was machine quilted in 1998.
QuiltBee Cat Swap Quilt
Still an unfinished work-in-progress. I exchanged cat blocks with other members of the QuiltBee On-Line Guild in a Cat
Block Swap summer 1998. My cat faces were by Debbie Mumm, featured in her book, Bowsers and Meowsers but I left the bow tie off for this project.
The blocks I received were of great variety, pieced and appliqué, with
alternating blocks in a traditional shoofly pattern. Watch this space for the completed
quilt.
Mitten Tree Quilt
My church sponsors an annual mitten tree to collect warm accessories (hats, mittens and scarves) which we give
away, and which inspired me to make this quilt. I had once seen a similar
block in a magazine, but this appliqué pattern, layout and
colours are my design. The tree is pieced, and there are a dozen pairs of mittens appliquéd with buttonhole stitch. It's been machine quilted with a meandering pattern and there is also a quilted heart in the centre of each palm. This quilt has a secret! One mitten was left open at the top to make a hidden pocket for the lucky child or adult who now owns this nap-size quilt.
